Years ago I worked as a consultant at part of the NHS that was working on knowledge management and complex search tools to help doctors find out about drugs and side effects etc. Dull story so far, but bear with me. The interesting stuff came as I began to look through the various documents that looked at symptoms and gave an idea of what could be wrong with you. You see, it’s not as easy as “runny nose = cold” or “aching lumber = backache”, the list of symptoms and the potential illnesses was huge and involved complex cross-referencing and investigation. It’s a difficult job requiring years of training and experience.
There are arguments to say that it’s just as difficult to diagnose what’s going wrong with a website, but let’s face it, a website is unlikely to kill you…
So, we’ve got the Twitter Competition all going on, why not up the ante a bit with a Facebook competition too? OK then, we’re offering a free Flip Mino to one random fan of our Facebook page. Easy huh? Still not sure? I’ll explain more…
The new swine flu helpline and website was launched yesterday and guess what? It crashed! But is this really a surprise? With millions of people in the UK being told about it and it being the first one of its type in the world – is it any wonder that millions are going to look at it?
One of the results of a big recession is that many companies reduce their marketing budget drastically. It’s almost the first thing to get its budget reduced as managers and accountants decide that all that advertising nonsense must have been worthless.
Oh hum.
Now. It’s kinda the done thing for people in our industry (web marketing etc.) to put a list of websites they are doing SEO for and then show the keywords they’re working on for them. We love ourselves you see. But we don’t do that. We’ve never done that and I really couldn’t explain why we hadn’t done that until today when Chris (the chinny one) sent a link to a site that was doing that and it made me think – “Us SEO lot really are very stupid sometimes”.
..yes.
Well, if you are clever and actually use it for what it is and engage with your customers. If you’re the sort that thinks all this Internet malarky is for other people then you won’t, but maybe we should all sit up and listen when a name, a big name announces they’ve made a bit of cash from the social networking site of the moment…
It’s hard to keep track of everything going on here and our portfolio is sadly lacking our latest success stories (must update it soon!), however, we have this here blog thing and as quite a few people read it (honestly, they do!), I’ll keep you up to date with happenings right here.
A number of times now I’ve met people who tell me that they’re really proud of their ‘number five’ position for a really competitive search term. A couple of months ago it happened and the guy was quite smug. I took a look at his site and thought “there’s no way that bag of crap is number five…”
I was right. When I ran my magic ranking tool it found hum down at number 67, quite a difference.
