OK, I’ll admit it, I do these things as experiments to test out SEO techniques and to see what markets are like before I enter them. However in the back of my mind I’m also looking for something that might make a bit of money on the side, so here’s the story of how an ‘idea’ formed a couple of weeks ago turned into a daily check to see how much money I made…

First of all, the subject matter of ‘tyre changers‘ came about because we are currently looking to work with a company in this market to help with their SEO. So, before we enter into any agreement, I feel it’s always prudent to check what the other competition is doing and check out whether the work I do could actually make any kind of difference to our potential customer.

This might sound crazy, but I don’t like giving anything like guarantees to people or even suggesting I can help them if I don’t know the market, so before I start work – I check out the market.

Turns out there are a lot of searches for ‘tyre changers’ and not much competition. Highlighted by the fact that our blog and my new site have ranked so well within two short weeks. Given a bit more work, they should rise to the top quite easily.

So, we can work with the client – we know we can help them so I’m happy to enter into an agreement with them.

But there was a side effect. You see, just throwing a website up is OK, but what’s really important is measuring people’s interaction with the site. So, I added some eBay auctions and watched. These are real auctions linked to my affiliate ID and so far, I’ve made a bit of money!

My site is actually number one or two on Yahoo (depending on the search terms used) and this is bringing in enough visitors who are buying stuff to mean I’m eaning a few quid every day.

This is quite an unexpected side-effect and I’ll write more about it soon, but I’ll leave you with this thought: SEO is not only for existing business. If you’re looking to make money online using someone else’s products as a bit of a ‘side line’, it’s perfectly possible. You just need to know how!!
